HW 27 - Visiting an unwell person

Well since i was visiting my grandmother i acted like i always do when i see her which is happy and nice. She has bein diognosed with cancer since i could remember and i never treated her any differently because she is ill. Of course i feel bad for her and wish that she wasn't ill but the best thing i could do at this point is give her things and help her with whatever she wants. However me acting sorry for her and giving her what she wants is simply due to the result of human vulnerability and mortality. I feel as though i need to make her life easier any way possible for that sickness must make her life really difficult.
Insights from the the book, "Tuesdays With Morrie" apply to the situation of the person i visited because in the book it talked about howw people who visited morrie felt pity for him and wanted to give Morrie anything he wanted. In that same way i felt as though i had to give my grandmother anything she wanted due to the pity i felt for her because she is ill.
Once i reached my grandmother's house she opened the door and i greeted her with a huge. After greeting her we decided to take a seat in The kitchen when i noticed that she couldn't walk to fast and she looked as if walking took alot of energy out of her. So i helped her by letting her hold on to me while giving her support  by telling her to not try so hard. We then talked about how was school going, she then talked about her past, and how my family in Ecuador are doing. Even though these stories usually take hours i don't mind one bit and actually enjoy them because i cherish the time i have with my grandmother because any day colud be her last.
So after like two hours of listening to my grandmothers stories she went to the fridge to get something to eat when she realized that she had no food. She then told me that she was going to go to the grocery store. Even though the store is two blocks away i felt as though she shouldn't go to the store while i'm there and should only relax. That's when i said," Dont worry about it i'll go to the store for you just let me make a list of the things you want and i'll be sure to get it for you." So i went to the grocery store and got what she wanted and 20 minutes later i brought her back the foods that she wanted.
After she thanked me for bringing her, her food i felt really good because i feel so bad for her and since she is so ill i feel as though she needs to relax and not push herself to do things. About two minutes later my grandmother decided to start making some soup for the both of us. While the soup was cooking my grandmother and i started watching television. We watched telemundo and the shows had us laughing. After thirty minutes the soup was ready  we went to the table and ate soup. I told her thank you and how good the soup was. Talked some more for a little while eating. After i was done with the soup i told her i had to go and hugged her good bye and went on my way back home. It was a good day and i felt really happy because i spent  time with my grandmother.

HW 26 - Looking Back & Forward In Unit

4-5 important ideas, insights, or items of information that I have learned in this unit so far (and the source):
1) Everything that we eat is made out of corn(Omnivores dilemma young readers addition)
2) What really happens to the animals in Processed farms is nightmarish and corrupt(Class movie & Omnivores dilemma young readers addition)
3) Death doesn't necessarily have to be a bad thing and death is only as bad as you make it(Tuesdays With Morrie)
4) Other countries such as France and Britian have way better health care than the U.S(Class Movie)
5) The big insurance companies only want to help themselves and only help the people when it's also benefiting them(class movie)
The book, "Tuesdays With Morrie" has been most helpful for me in coming to a deeper understanding of our culture's dominant social practices around illness and dying because it showed me that everyone feels pity for the ill person. It also showed me that due to pity you feel it necessary to give the ill person anything he wants and make his last days pleasant. Beth's speech made me come to a deeper understanding of our culture's dominant social practices around illness and dying. It made me come to a deeper understanding because it made me realize that the hospitals really do care about money over peoples health.
Questions I think is most important to explore in the final two weeks:
 1) Are there people high in power trying to help us and not trying to only get money? And if so who are they?
2) Why aren't we given as much medical attention when we aren't close to dying?
3) Are doctors forced to decline patients due to there superiors?
We could best explore this topic by looking at some more videos or other texts answering to the questions above
addressing question 1:  There appears to be no just people high in power trying to help us. The only time they "help us" is when they are secretly getting big money from the governmet. To make matters worse doctors also have the power to decline there patients of medical help. The reason this is not just is because the doctos do this just so they could make more money because some of these treatments coast the hospitals millions of dollars. However the worse thing of all is this corrupt system doesn't seem like it's going to get better anytime soon.
Addressing question 2: Maybe we aren't given given as much medical attention when we arent close to dying because the doctors dont think we need it. I also think we aren't given as much medical attention because doctors dont want to waste there time and possibly spend the companies money. For example doctors are always acting like they are very busy and always have stuff to do but when my mom makes an appointment and i go see a doctor they always seem so relaxed and as if they weren't doing anything. Also the doctors always want to take the least amount of time they could with there patients and move on to the next as if they dont really care. This is yet another reason why i think this system is so corrupt.

HW 25 - Response To Sicko

Summary:America's health care system is not really meant to help the people of the United States get better. These medical centers wont even help insured people. They only care to help the health insurance companies make more money by reducing the amount of care that the people recieve. There are many people in America without any health care whatsoever and for the people that do have health care they are still treated as if they are without healthcare. This is because these insurance companies want money and will charge these people huge amounts of money for operations. To make matters worse often times they will even deny patients the medical help they need in order to stay alive because those medical companies dont want to give up the money the have. Which is a corrupt way of looking at things because in other countries such as France, and England they dont charge you for medical help including almost all the treatments the patient needs  to stay alive.
Evidence"
A: Michael Moore's first piece of evidence to bolster his argument in Sicko was denying the people of medical help when they had health insurance
Michael Moore's second piece of evidence to bolster his argument in Sicko was how other countries have better healthcare where all the doctors work for the government and actually give as much medical care they need to give their patients while still getting paid a good amount of money.
B: These pieces of of evidence was important for supporting his thesis because theses points needed to be made across and known that our insurance companies are scamming us and care more about money then they care about us. It also is important because it lets us know how our medical system and health insurance compare to other countries medical system and health insurance, and as you know we dont compare to other countries medical system because America's big insurance companies are so greedy and want money.
D: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FqtrgU9VH7E
This piece of evidence is very legite and very accurate. It explains how C.E.O's are denying we the people's health care just  so theyt can make huge amounts of money.
Response:
The most important excerpts of the movie that i watched was when they were talking about how these big insurerance companies are getting rich off of declining us of the medical care we need. The ideas that struck me the most was actually finding out how bad our health system is. It's amost as if there is nothing left in america that's sane and isn't involved with big companies getting money. The feelings that struck me as most crucial is when they showed that they declined a child of health care simply because the big insurance companies didn't want to loss there money. This movie did affect my perspective on the dominant social practices around illness & dying in our culture because it shows that no one is really going to help you. This movie also made me realize that the people that know you may feel pity on you however the ones that can help you become more healthy and better would rather let you die because they think money is more important then a life.

HW 24 - Illness & Dying Book, Part 3

Author: Mitch Albom
Title: Tuesdays with Morrie
publisher: Doubleday
Year published:  1997
Precis:
Morrie has been such had such a positive impact in my life, and for that i am very thankful. Morrie was more than a teacher to me. He was like my mentor and the person that i went to whenever i needed advice. Morrie was such a good man and the way he handled his slow death with such positive thinkings and intentions made him a even stronger man. I am very thankful that Morrie's death became noticed and was put on the television because im sure that this has helped other people just like it has helped me. Morrie made me realize that death doesn't have to be such a bad thing and it all depends on you, and how you want to spend your last few days alive.
Quotes:
On page 174, "As long as we can love eachother, and remember the feeling of love we had, we can die without ever really going away. The way I interpreted this quote was, if the ones that loved us dont forget about us we aren't really gone because we are still thought about.
On pae 182, "Morrie hadn't chewed food like this in months, we both knew that, but it had become a small tradition. Sometimes, when you're losing someone, you hang on to whatever tradition you can." This reminded me that people try to do anything to remember the person before they got ill. Like Mitch's tradidtions I to used to have litlle traditions with my close family members and still tried to do them even when my dear one was ill as a way to remind me of the good times we had before and how close we used to be.
On page 199, " I can never put into words how humbled i am by all this, and how proud i am for Morrie that his gentle wisdom is settled like a snowfall on various streets around the world." This quote reminded me that Mitch is a very understanding guy and this quote also reminded me how Mitch really grew attached to Morrie. I believe that Mitch will never forget Morrie and even though Morrie is dead i believe that Mitch feels nothing but joy and gratitude.
Thoughts on book:
This books was very insightful. It made me think about things i never thought of before. This book also made me realize that dying doesn't necessarily have to be a bad thing. One of the things that i never thought of was how someone could act so calmly and think so positively when they know that they only have a few more months to live. Morrie was a very inspirational  man indeed and  Mitch is very lucky to have known Morrie personaly. Other than thinking so positively he was a very wise man and knew just what to say whenever Mitch needed advice. I would give this book a 10 out of 10 because this book will make you think of things you never thought of before and it is so informative.

HW 23 - lllness & Dying Book, Part 2

Precis:
As the days go by I am realizing that Morrie Is able to talk with less and less with clarity. It would only be a matter of time before Morrie is speaking so unclear that nobody would be able to understand what he is saying. Despite how unclear his words have become Morrie is still talking about when he was child his mother passed away. This caused Morrie to tear up because he is still sad and it makes him sad still to talk about it. To makes matter worse when Morrie's mother died he had to live with his father who was very poor and constantly out of a job. Also his brother was ill and constantly had to go to a special medical home because his leg was in a bad state wear he had to wear braces on his leg all the time which left him limping. So as you can see morrie is a very strong minded person and I am glad to call Morrie my friend.
Quotes:
On page 70, "He had trouble pronouncing certain words-the I sound seemed to get caught in his throat. In a few more months, he might no longer speak at all." This quote proves to me that time passing by can also bring stress into ones life because another day is another day closer to death.
On page 75,"But a saving embrace came into Morrie's life the following year: his new stepmother, Eva." This quote reminded me that no matter how bad your life is going there will always be that one person that will believe in you and make you feel better.
On page 86, "There was a letter from a man in England who had lost his mother and asked morrie to help him contact her through the spiritual world. There was a letter from a couple who wanted to drive to boston to meet him."  This quote reminded me that there are people out there that are going through the same situation and pain as you and  there are even people out there that are going through worse situations than you.
Thoughts:
I believe that Morrie is a very strong minded person. I love the way that he keeps so positive and acts as if he is fine even though throughout every passing day he is becoming more and more ill.  I  am glad that Morrie got the opportunity to share his death with people and that they recorded Morrie's final days and put them on televsision. I believe that a lot of people can learn from Morrie, I know I did because i never thought that  anybody would be so positive and act so calmly when they know they only have a limited amount of time left before they die.

Hw 22 - Illness & Dying Book Part 1

Author: Mitch Albom
Title: Tuesdays with Morrie
publisher: Doubleday
Year published:  1997

Precis: Morrie was everything to me. He was more than my teacher, he was my friend. After i found out that Morrie was going to die i felt as though it was my job to make the rest of his life the best it could possibly be. One day when i was watching television I heard Morrie's name and I saw my classroom and i saw myself in  the television. It reminded me of the good times we had together and how close we were. This reminded me of the past but ever since Morrie died things have changed. I don't even see any of my collage friends anymore or even talk to them. It was as if Morrie was the one holding everybody's friendship together and once he died everyone started seeing each other less and less until we would no longer see each other again.

The quote on page 14, "In fact, i lost contact with most of the people i knew in college, including my beer-drinking friends and the first women i ever woke up with in the morning." Made me realize that someone's death can not only affect you emotionally but  it can also affect your relationship with the ones that you were once close to. This quote also proves that someone's death can impact your friendships with others because the other guy or in this case morrie was the one that brung everyone together.
The quote on page 20,"I usually don't talk about such things with people i've only known a few minutes" Made me realize that Being closer to your death makes you want to be less to yourself and let people know what you feel, how your life was, etc. This also made me come about to the realization that time is precious in your last few days, so you need to make the most of it.
The quote on page 19, "Next thing you knew, there were cameramen in Morrie's living room and koppel's limousine was in front of the house. Made me realize that the time one has left is very precious and you have to make the most of it. I also realized one should take any opportunities that come there way. Unless if it is a demeaning opportunity your getting. This quote also proves that people are very interested and more willing to learn and help a ill person. For we feel pity and want to  help ill people because it seems to be the only logical and right thing to do.
The book, "Tuesdays with Morrie" can connect to events that have happened in my life because, in the book The student of Morrie felt as though he needed to make Morrie's Final days the most enjoyable until he died. This can compare to events in my life because whenever i was visiting my ill grandmother i would give her whatever she wanted and I tried to make her days the most enjoyable she has ever had. The way morrie died could also compare to that of my grandmother because morrie decided to make the best of life and do whatever he could to make his last few days enjoyable. This compares to the way my grandmother dealt with her final days because, she also tried to make her final days enjoyable. She spent a lot of time with family and the ones closest to her. So I learned that dying isn't necessarily a bad thing and it is just a part of life that everybody has to go through. I also learned that since everyone dies it would be best to not die in a close minded way and to try and make your final days the most enjoyable.

HW 21 - Expert#1

most important insights & experiences shared by the guest speaker

-Took 11 months for Beth's husband to get insurance
- Beth's husband was diagnosed with kidney cancer thanksgiving evening 2006
- Beth's husband slept sitting up and couldn't sleep regularly
- Erik couldn't see his son graduate
- Towards the end of Erik's life he became 90 pounds.
Waiting for eleven months just to get insurance Must have been the most stressful thing to wait for. This Must've been very stressful because having to wait almost one whole year not knowing if Erik would get medical help  is something nobody should be waiting for. The reason that this stood out to me so much is because It took so long for Erik to get insured which probably means that the doctors are very busy or very lazy. However Erik not being insured also probably means that his family and Erik were probably not expecting this to happen and therefore took no precaution and didn't even think of the possibility that this could happen.
Beth being diagnosed with kidney cancer on thanksgiving evening of 2006 really made me realize that this could happen to anyone at anytime. It also made me realize that you truly should enjoy the time that you have with people and be thankful for each day you're still on this earth. For everyone dies and and we don't know when we will die so we should make the most out of life and be thankful for everything. However this also made me realize that you should always do exercise and eat more healthy. Even if it's not much exercise or much vegetables that you're consuming because every little thing helps. and it is at your best that you should take advantage and do these things because you are still able to do these things on your own.

Beth's presentation made me remember all of the sad things and how cruel this world could be. However i am glad that she reminded me because it made me realize that i should cherish my days more and try to make the best out of the days i have on this earth. She also reminded me of all the family members i had lost and how no matter how long it has been since your family member died they will always be with you in your hearts. She also made me realize that by losing one of my family members made me loss contact with other family members because we used to get together before and now my parents don't even talk to certain family members. So Beth basically reminded me that the world waits for no one and every ones time will come so try to make the most of the life we have until that dreadful day.

HW 18 - Health & Illness & Feasting

This years thanksgiving  was practically the same as every year. Thanksgiving is practically one of the few times in a year that completely fills in the role of our countries practices, this also relates to physicality. However over the years thanksgiving seems to be losing its meaning of spending time with the family and is becoming less traditional and less cultural  and more about eating food and stuffing your face. For example almost ever year me, my parents, my brothers, my sister, my grandmother and uncle go to my godmothers house to celebrate the holiday. However this year we had thanksgiving in my house and my grandmother and uncle didn't seem to happy to be at my house. It's as if they wanted to be somewhere else. However they knew that there was going to be a lot of food in my house so they took advantage and come to my house.
Traditionally my family and I don't sit around the television and watch football. Although it is a very american  game and many people like to watch this sport my family and I are not big fans of football and therefore we don't watch football. However my family and i do gather around the television and watch spanish channels such as television and we even watch other sports such as soccer. These two activities such as stuffing your face and watching t.v. with family aren't necessarily "Healthy" things to do, However this proves how thanksgiving is one of the few times where body-centered practices dominate over anti body practices.
Completely devoted social practices one day out of the year is not a bad thing in my opinion. I think this because almost all the other holidays are connected with your brain. For example after consuming all of that food you tend to feel worse and you feel so lazy to the point were you don't even want to get up off from your seat. This  is another example that shows that thanksgiving is becoming more about body-centered practices and less about  anti-body practices.

HW- 17-First Thoughts On The Illness & Dying Unit

I have no experience and have very little knowledge about illness's and dying. However i have gone to a funeral like once or twice in my life. I have also gone to the hospital multiple times because my grandmother was ill. Also because my mother was ill at some point but is better now. So this unit is going to be something i have never done before and this will most likely grab my attention.
The way i have been taught to see illness's is by treating the ill person as if everything was normal and as if he wasn't in the hospital. However i have aslo been taught to Tend to his needs by giving him whatever he asks for. Some social norms of ilness's & dying in our society is after a person dies that person has to either be cremated or buried. Another social norm that we have is we attend the funeral's of the one that died.
My families approach to these aspects of life is to cry over the person that's ill. To give them spiritual help by telling them that good is with them. Also my family will give the ill person anything they wanted, and do anything to keep the ill person happy.  One unusual perspective i have about being sick and/or dying is, maybe dying is just another part of life we have to go through but not really the end of the road for us. Another unusual perspective i have is, is burying or cremating the body the only "right way" of disposing the body.

HW 12 - Final Food Project 2 - Outline

Overarching Thesis: Individual living in our culture must recognize and respond to the nightmarish industrial atrocities at the root of dominant social practices in order to live a morally satisfactory life.
 Argument #1: Food
Major claim: Corrupt corporate business's Have become so greedy with having money that don't care for quality foods or health benefits anymore.
Supporting claim #1: Chemicals being added to meat for a faster shipping rate as well as unnatural feeding and contaminated processed ground beef

-Adding chemicals to processed foods for a faster shipping rate
Evidence:  By adding so much chmicals to there meats, people argue that there meat isn't even "real food" because the final product needs coloring added to it just so it could look like how meat is supposed to look.
-cows being fed corn leads to Kevins death because of a public breakout of E-Coli
Evidence: In Food, Inc. Barbara Kowalcyk's 2 year old son dies from E.coli poisoning after eating a hamburger."
-Contaminated processed ground beef
Evidence: After being tested positive for salmonella contamination, several ground beef processing plants were still able to sell there meats for several months after they took steps to cleaning up therefacilities.
Supporting claim #2:Heart diseases as well as obesity increase and  increase in diabetes
- heart disease, nothing but bad
Evidence: People with diabeties tend to have strokes twice as likely then those that do not have a heart disease. Also peopl with diabetes tend to have a stroke at a very early age that people.
-A huge obesity increase
Evidence: In 1971 the obisity rate was 5.8% and  in 2006 there has bein a 17.3% obisity rate.Which means that there is a 11.5% increase from 1971 to 2006
-Increase in diabetes
Evidence: from 1980 to 2008 there has bein a 144% increase in how many people had diabetes

HW 11 - Final Food Project 1

Being a vegetarian wasn't as hard as I initially thought it was going to be. Although i couldn't eat meat for 48 hours i found alternative ways to eating foods i liked. For example I had Rice and beans, many different salads and I also had cereal. One example of the salad i ate had lettuce and tomato's in it. The cereal i ate both days were lucky charms with milk.
Eating a meal with no meat in it made me feel so much fuller than if i ate a meal with meat in it. I also felt more better. What i mean by this is i wasn't as sleepy as i usualy am, and i felt more healthy. I wasn't as lazy as i usually am either. I wanted to go to the park an play sports and just go outside instead of staying home being on the computer all day. While eating these vegetarian meals it made me think more about the cruelty that they inflict on animals.
Being a vegetarian also made me do alot of thinking, for example i thought that everyone should try to be a vegetarian or they should have alot of salads and fruits so that they could balance out there diet. I also though more about the foods i was going to eat. When i was in the supermarket I saw fat foods and meats and thought to myself that these foods may be good to you but there not good for you. Just like in the movie we dont know the whole truth about what's in foods so its better to be safe ad go green rather than eating processed foods that could harm your body.
There is nothing more i could next time to make this process more efficient. I liked this "going vegetarian" experience. It kinda changed the way i am going to eat from here on out. I've decided to balance my meals to make it less fat and more healthy. One example would be, im going to always have a salad in my meal when i am eating meat.  I am also going to have fruits everyday, even if it's only one fruit a day that i am having. However the main thing that made me decide to eat more healthy was while eating vegetables it made me feel more better and more willing to do stuff, and i liked that feeling.

HW 12 - Final Food Project 2 - Outline

Thesis: Individual living in our culture must recognize and respond to the nightmarish industrial atrocities at the root of dominant social practices in order to live a morally satisfactory life.
Argument #1: Many of the dominant social practices in our society is considered “normal,” however if we dig deeper and find out what the big companies don’t want us to know (the whole story) then the citizens of the United States will end up finding nightmarish and industrial atrocities. One of these nightmarish atrocities being, what process did the foods go through to get to the supermarket. Another example would be, not many people know what really happens in these “farms.” Processed foods(Fast foods) we eat have added chemicals in them. These chemicals are added to the foods just so the companies could make more money for themselves by having there foods ready for shipment at a faster rate. Keep in mind that these foods get shipped everywhere, for example they get shipped to Mc.Donalds and supermarkets. Also a lot of these processed foods are very unhealthy for us. One could even debate that the foods we eat isn’t even real food. The reason people are starting to think this is because chickens, cows, and pigs are now getting dipped into so many chemicals that when they are “ready” for shipment the flavors and the coloring is not natural it’s processed.
Evidence
: Omnivore’s dilemma young readers editionEvidence: Still rising obesity rates
Argument #2: Fast foods restaurants are so easy to come across nowadays that it’s no wonder obesity rates are increasing. However this isn’t necessarily only the peoples fault because the companies are promoting this.
Evidence: Omnivore’s dilemma young Readers edition
Evidence: Still rising obesity rates

Monday, October 25, 2010

Thesis Statement:
Processed foods are a atrocity in this society, these nightmarish industrial foods prove to be very bad for the body, however some dominant social practices show that organic foods could be the cure for this curropt foodway of life.
Alot of foods can be considered atrocities to us because these nightmarish foods are not good for us and it isn't healthy or "real food." However organic foods would be the normal way to go because organic foods are filled with no chemicals and more healthier.
Proposal #1: Experimental.
Proposal #2: Academic.

HW 7d

Omnivore's Dilemma: Young Readers' Edition Chapters 21
Precis: Mushroom hunting is much harder than one would think. The reson for this is because mushrooms have it's own seasons for sprouting and only sprout under some trees. The reason hunters call it mushroom hunting is because they must don't simply pick out a bunch of mushrooms rather they must go and search for some and some mushrooms may be poisonous and cannot be eaten. Also while hunting for mushrooms alot of questions had popped up that not even scientists knew. Later I had found out that mushrooms are really hard to abalyze because if you pull a mushroom from the ground parts of the mushroom will just fall off from the mushroom.
Quote: On page 252, "These thin, threadlike cells form a web buried in the soil. You can't dig it up a mushroom to study it because the mycelium is too tiny and delicate. If you try to seperate them from the soil they just fall apart.
Thoughts: Mushrooms seem to have more to them than meets the eye. I wonder what the differences are between a regular mushroom and a poisonous mushroom are, because some people have gotten the two mixed up before.
Omnivore's Dilemma: Young Readers' Edition Chapters 22
Precis:  Preparing a "perfect meal was harder than expected. Making foods that are healthier and better for the body to ingest is much harder than just eating a cheeseburger. However I was not about to prepare these fast foods because i was inviting all the people that has helped me along my advanture to eat with me. It was a way of saying thank you to all of the people that has helped me with research. Also even thought some of the foods were made from animals such as pigs, I made sure that it was helthier for us to eat. (organic)
Quote: On page 275, "One of the wonders of my do-it-yourself meal was how little it had damaged the world."
Thoughts: It appears that the narrator has changed his view food. It appears as if he now cares more about what foods he eats and he will not eat certain foods that he might had eaten if he had not gone through this advanture.

HW 10 - Food, Inc. Response

Processed farms are treating Chickens like fruits. This is terrible because the difference between the chickens and the fruits is that chickens have life, unlike fruits, chickens feel pain and do suffer. To make matters worse the chickens don't even live a good life before they die. As a matter a fact chickens life couldn't be worse, They cant even walk without fallen because of how big they've become. However Organic farms are better both for how they treat chickens before they kill them but also for us to eat. The chickens in the organic farms get to life outdoors and aren't forced to eat only corn. The chickens are living like they naturally would. Plus in the organic farms they dont add chemicals to the chickens to make the delivering process faster.
The movie offered a real visual image plus it showed the exact process of the way the chickens died, which is something the book didn't show. On the other hand the book was more detailed in other parts like what the chicken lives were like before dying and what abormal things the chickens did because they were caged up.
One question that i still have is why in the world do these big governments not wait a few days for delivering there foods to the supermarkets and feel the need to add chemicals to there foods? One thought i have is, can humans be so blinded by money that they dont see the totures things they are doing to the animals?

HW 7d.

Omnivore's Dilemma: Young Readers' Edition Ch. 20
Precis: Waning to Hunt for the pigs was on my agenda because i felt a though i needed to know how it makes the person feel and what he thinks while huntng.  Me and me colleagues stumbled across a couple of pigs, which made me feel very pumped but also a little sad because i was going to decide the fate of the pig. With these mixed emotins i finally got a clear shoot on the animal and killed it. I was so Relieved to find out that i didn't need to shoot the animal again. Even though it seems as though i was feeling sad truth be told hunting is very exciting.
Quote: On page 240, "Death was quickly overtaking her. I was relieved she wouldn't need a second shoot."
Thoughts: This shows me that the main character isn't like other people in this world ans even though he's a meat eater he does feel pity for animals. Which is also understandible because you took someones life. This is a very sad thing.

HW 7d

Omnivore's Dilemma: Young Readers' Edition Ch. 19
Precis: Animals happines matters to alot of vegetarians, this is because they see an animals life as precious as human lives so you could imagine why vegtarians so this as a crime. However the people killing the animal doesn't see killing a animals life as precious as others might and it appears as though they have no problem doing it, but they dont seem satisfied doing it because they try to keep what goes on in the slaughterhouse a secret. In addition not everybody knows that vegetarians actually take sacrifices being a vegetarian because many of his friends may be meat eaters. This thus leads to unfomfortable eating with friends and even becoming a birden to family or friends.
Quote: On page , "As a guest, if I forget to tell my hosts in advance that I don't eat meat, they feel bad. But if i do tell them, they'll make something special for me, and i'll feel bad."
Thoughts: I believe that this is really bad luck to the vegetarians, that so many people are carnivores. But i also believe that some sacrifices need to be made when being healthy. Also in the long run being a vegetarian would be the better choice.

HW 7d

Omnivore's Dilemma: Young Readers' Edition chap. 18
Precis: Getting a hunters license was more work than usual because we have to go to class so we coud learn about this stuff. However getting a gun in california involved no work at all, anyone could get a high powered rifle there. After going through the hunting classes i was finally able to go hunting. Once i knew i was going to be able to hunt i got very excited. Once i was at beverly hill's it made me realized dat i haven't been seing the world like i have in a long time.
Quote: On page 212, " But looking for food did change the way i looked at nature. It made me look more closely at  everything. It made me pay attention in a way i haden't in years."
Thoughts: I cant believe it made him realize that he hadn't seen the world this way. Are there more people like this due to the foods we have and how easy it is to obtain food?

HW 7d

Omnivore's Dilemma: Young Readers' Edition  Ch. 17
Precis: pastured animals are healthier to eat and live a more happier life. Pastured animals also contain higher levels of polyunsaturated fats instead of monounsaturated fats, which is healthier and better for the humans to eat. The reason for the chickens being healthier was because they lived outdoors all there lives. Another reason would be because animals raised outdoors live on a diet much like that of the wild animals, so its no wonder they would be better to eat because they aren't forced to only eat one thing thats not the best thing for them to eat.
Quote: On page 197, "When cattle, chickens, and other animals eat grass And not just corn or other grains they are actually healthier for us to eat."
Thoughts: Is grasss the best thing for animals such as cattle, chickens, and other animal to eat? Or is there something even better for animals to eat?

HW 7c

Omnivore's Dilemma: Young Readers' Edition Ch. 13
Precis: Farming was a family business. "I'm actually a third-generation alternative farmer." Joel said. the farm now known as polyface wasnt was in a worse condition then it is than now.The reason for this was because the farm had bein abused by other tenant farmers. This became a huge  problem because other farmers would still grow corn and other grains there. This resulted in soils no loner being soil, and ever since then they've bein trying to rapair the farm.
Quote: on page 159, "In many places there was no topsoil left whatsoever just outcroppings of granite and clay. We've been working to heal this land ever since."
Thoughts: I cant believe that some farmers dont have any respect for there farms. They shouldn't be farmers then if they're
going to disrespect a farm like that.
Omnivore's Dilemma: Young Readers' Edition Ch. 14
Precis: During the winter the corn ferments. This turns the corn into alcohol. This is very suprising because why would joel leave this for the pigs to eat? The answer i recieved was because pigs love it, and that pigs are especially useful for rooting it out with his powerful snout and for there good sense of smell. The reason this is very useful to joel is because the pigs kill any harmful bacteria.
Quote: on page 168, "This is the sort of farm machinary I like," Joel told me on afternoon as we watched the pigs do their work."
Thoughts: This quote shows that pigs are very useful in the farms. They seem like they live a happy live, thats is until they are killed to be made into food.
Omnivore's Dilemma: Young Readers' Edition Ch. 15
Precis: The process of the birds being killed was hard to watch. You cant help but feel sad for the chicken. I was even able to kill a chicken myself. I had to follow a procedure on how to kill the chicken(chop the chickens head off). When i saw the chicken and looked into his eyes luckily i didn't feel anything so i was comfortable killing the chicken but it was a rather sad thing to do. I had killed a dozen chicken or so before moving on to the next station.
Quote: On page 177, "I looked into the black eye of the chicken and, thankfully I saw nothing, not a flicker of fear."
Thoughts: I always hated the process of how chickens died. It's so sad but i love chicken wings and chicken in general so i guess i shouldn't complain.
Omnivore's Dilemma: Young Readers' Edition Ch. 16
Precis: Eevm though food is the focus of our international movement, we can decide what foods go into our bodies. We the people can make big changes in the food system, for example our desire to have cleaner, healthier foods have created a $20-billion market for industrial organic foods. However changing to a locol food economy wont be easy. But I believe that when consumers know once again how there food is produced they will eat the most healthiest cleanist foods. Eating localy will also benefit the farmers because this will mean that the farmers will not have to leave there farms to live somewhere else.
Quote: on page 191, "When consumers know once again how their food is produced, they are naturally going to want it produced in the cleanest, most humane and environmentally healthy ways.
Thoughts: I want to believe that humans will change when they know everything about how processed foods come to be, but i dont think people will stop eating fat foods. I believe this because these foods such as cheeseburgers or fried chicken have bein eaten by people for a long time and I dont think people will stop eating it because they like the food to much to stop eating it.

HW 9 - Freakonomics Response

One of the most intelectual moves the people in the movie made was bribery. An example of this is, the people from the University of Chicago wouldn't have bein able to do there little experiment if they did not bribe the students with money. However this move was a waste because one of the students actually failed even though he was being bribed with money. So despite the failed attempt of using bribery this was still something the people tried to use to get there data.
The most simple intellectual move that the people in the movie made was they went up to random people in the street to get information . This was done in the same time they were talking about peoples names (this section was basically during the beginning of the movie). The information the people tried to gather was all about names for example, what they think is a unique name. In my opinion, this is a good way to get sources because it is impossible to get corrupt data from this.  From the people speaking to other random people on the street we were able to learn that the patterns in our names are considered to be normal, but as we dig deeper we realize that the reason for that person having that name may actually be really wierd.
The past tool leads up to the third tool thaqt was used which was statistics. the statistics tool was most displayed in the sumo wrestling. Untol today sumo wrestling was one of the most hnorable sports there was. The sumo wrestling went so far back that the japanese people would connect it to there culture and there religion. However honor and far play was not so honorable anymore because reasearchers had found out that 75% of the time one of the wrestlers needed one ore win to move one to the next round, they usually fought someone who was already garenteed a spot in the next round. The resason for this was because the guy that needed one more win would win, later on in the movie I found out that the sumo wrestler with the garunteed spot let the other wrestler win.
I believe that the statistics are the most reliable. I think this because hard facts is something that can't be tampered with and it can be very hard to change the facts. For example in the sumo wrestling part of the movie the authors were trying to show us that there was a conspiracy happening  where the person with a gaurenteed spot of going to the next round would lose 3/4 times to a fighter that needed one more win. Although it is possible that the person that didn't need a win didn't do his best in the match because he felt as though he didn't need to, and that the person that only needed one more win tried as hard as he possibly could explain the previous statistic but i believe that there was cheating going on. Another piece of evidence that was relied on by the authors of Freakonomics is the interviews and with the professors interviewing random people on the street. However this method isonly accurate to those who were question ed and not for everyone. Also because not every one feels the same way on this subject.
I agree with the statement, that Freakonomics served as an information and a good example to attempt to explore the "hidden in plain sight" weirdness of dominant social practices. I agree because it showed me that there is always going to be parts of the story that most people wont know and one will need to dig deeper in order to find the "whole truth/whole story." This connects to our current studies on how many things that are considered normal are actually not normal at all in foodways. I believe these two things connect because in the movie it talks about how sumo wrestling can be used when talking about there culture and religion, and how there was signs of cheating, But it would in order to find cheating you would have to do alot of investigation work to really know "the truth" which is what you will have to do to find out about whole foods and processed foods. And this is may be weird to people because they would learn new things those new things they have learned may be very unexpected and weird to them.

HW 7c

Omnivore's Dilemma: Young Readers' Edition Ch. 12
Precis: Grass and herbivores formed a partnership over millions of years of evlolution. This evloution has progressed over time and in that time people learned how to grow grasses like wheat rice and corn. These grasses were different however becaus they had huge enriched edible seeds. This caused a huge change and difference in the world because  humans didn't need herbivores to turn the grass into meat.
Quote:"Humans could harvest and eat those seeds."
Thoughts:I wonder if new discoveries like this will be found out.
I wonder how long it would take to find new discoveries, if there are any.

HW 7b

Omnivore's Dilemma: Young Readers' Edition chpter 11
Precis: The non-organic food chain over the years have made great strides. Its good to know that the animals and plants that go into our meals weren't infected by pesticides. Also its good to know that no soils were poisoned. In recent studies we discovered that organic foods and vegetables contained higher levels of vitamin c and had a natural chemical called polyphenols.
Quote: The study showed that the organic fruits and vegetables contained higher levels of vitamin C. They also had a wider range of natural chemicals called polyphenols.
Thoughts: I cant believe that fruits and vegetables were this good for you.I knew they were good for you because I knew they are a good source of vitamin C, etc. But I had no idea it had polyphenols. And until now i didn't know what polyphenols were.

HW 7b - Reading Schedule

Omnivore's Dilemma: Young Readers' Edition chapter 10
Vegetables are a big deal in the U.S. and need to be cared for to make sure it reaches the supermarkets safely and fresh. What people don't know is that the farmers have their hands full keeping the vegetables fresh. For example the lettuce we eat before reaching the supermarkets need to be washed, need to be kept under a certain room temperature, and the leaves need to be sorted.  Also most people dont know how much of a struglle this is. Imagine having to wash 2.5 million pounds of lettuce each week. Now i dont know about you but that's more lettuce than i would wanna see in a week.
Quote:On page 125, "The plant washes and packs 2.5 million pounds of lettuce a week."
Thoughts: This blew my mind.I cant believe dat farmers work this hard.I truly believe dat farmers work to much and don't get paid as much as they should.

HW 8 - Growing Our Own Food

To grow some of my food was a pretty fun experience and something i've never done before. Unfortunantly though my plant never grew into food and i was unable to see my seeds sprout into plants. It lead to the realizations that farmers have a hard job  than i though. The fact that they have to grow way more food than i did is mind blowing. The process would have been magical if my plant grew but i still think that this was still a good experience.

HW 7b - Reading Schedule

chapter 6 of the Book "Omnivore's Dilemma: Young Readers' Edition"
Precis: The development of processed foods has grown so much over the years. I was able to get a tour of the research and development laboratory of general mills. Whrere I found out that the government makes more money off of selling processed foods then the farmers who make the food. This is why farmers perfer people buy whole foods because the farmer will get more money out of it.
Quote: On page 72, "The farmer on the other hand makes more money from whole foods than processed foods."
Thoughts: The governmnet abuses their power. They aren't fair and they are making alot more money then they should. They aren't doing as much as farmers to be making more than them on processed foods.
chapter 7 of the Book "Omnivore's Dilemma: Young Readers' Edition"
Precis:Obesity is now more than ever before. This is all because people are now getting their foods "supersized." I believe that this is because people are ashamed of not getting up and asking for seconds. Instead they'll just order a "supersized" meal. However not all of this is the peoples fault and the government has part of this huge apidemic. I say this because the government helps pay the farmers for corn and soy beans but not carrots. This means that the govt. Will only help pay for non healthy fat foods but not for healthy foods.
Quote: on page 83 "The U.S. governmnet (spending taxpayer dollars)helps pay farmers to grow corn and soybeans, but not to grow carrots.
Thoughts: The government should just pick a side because they tell us to eat healthy but they don't help with the problem and are actually part of the problem. They wanna seem like role models by telling us to eat healthy when in secrecy they are not helping the problem one bit.
chapter 8 of the Book "Omnivore's Dilemma: Young Readers' Edition"
Precis: Us beeng the omnivores we are can eat almost any food there is. We try different foods and most humans rely on how the food tastes like.If the person likes the food most likely he'll continue eating it but if the person doesn't like the way the food tastes like the person will most likely not continue eating it.  However we cant always rely on our tastebuds because some people may not like vegetables but it is good for the person.
Quote: On page 89, "It turns out that some of the bitterest plants contain valuable nutrients, even useful medicines. We can;t only rely on our sense of taste when we chose what we eat."
Thoughts I blieve that this is true but it will be hard for a person to start eating foods that they dont like just because it is good for things.
chapter 9 of the Book "Omnivore's Dilemma: Young Readers' Edition"
Precis: The meal at mc. Donalds was good. The chesseburger was good but without the ketchup, mustard, pickles, ad onions the grey patty had hardly any flavor. This made me realize that these undustrial foods have been processed so much it no longer seems as though they were made from animals. This caused me to add up how much corn Judith, Isaac, and i consumed and it added up to three and a half pounds of corn!!!!That was much more than expected
Quote: On page 102, "Where did my cheeseburger come from? It came from McDonald's. As far as food companies are concerned, that's all we need to know."
Thoughts: Mcdonalds and other fast food restaurants dont tell the whole story of where their foods come from.I wonder if they are embarrased of how there cheeseburgers are made.

HW 8 - Growing Our Own Food

Growing my own food wasn't really a good experience, It was merely plants growing to me. The realizaions that this experiment led to was it proved what i thought which was everyone can make the same food and that making your own food from scratch isn't anything special. This process was more of a forced one because I would never do this on my free time, However it was new and interesting,

HW 7 - Reading Response Monday

Title: The omnivore's ilemma

On chapters one and two corn Is a big topic. In every single food there is corn added to it. Even foods that may not seem that they have corn in it, corn is there for example chicken nuggets are really corn wrapped up in more corn. So the phrase you are what you eat, is true but this means that what we are today is corn. This is true because scientists have traced te element of carbon as it goes from the atmosphere into plants, then inot our food, and finally, into us.
Alot of meat eaters dont actually know what's in their foods and because of this it is likely that they eat all different types of foods. However even more people dont know or even think about, what that animal ur about to eat has eaten before it died. As one could imagine animals dont have such a huge varieties of food o choose from, and they can only eat either what they are given by the farmers or what they find. But this is just the beginning of the bad news because the cow would eat only corn and be around its own manure every single day. So eating a hamburger would be like eating toxic waste.

HW 6 - Food Diary

Over the past 48 hours Fried foods such as fried chicken, soups, Sandwiches, and snacks such as Gogurt,Rice krispie treats and oreo's is what I've eaten. Fried chicken isn't very healthy for the body however it is very delicious. My physical experience with the food has bein a good one. I've eaten fried chicken all my life and i'm not obeast. Fried chicken would have to be the food I most enjoyed eating. Soup Would be the food I least enjoyed eating.I hate soup it isn't filling and it's not good. So I have had a bad experience with soup. Sandwiches and the snacks listed above is a food that is just in the midde. I have no problem eating sandwiches or snacks because they aren't nasty but I could never call a sandwich or snacks a meal. So i guess I have had a good experience with sandwiches and snacks.
Some of the foods i picked wheren't my choice. For example the Soup that I ate was because that was what my mom cooked and it was either the soup or nothing. However the Fried chicken I ate was all me.I wanted some fried chicken because I know that I like that food and i wanted something I enjoy eating for lunch. The snacks I ate was because I got hungry and i didn't want a meal so i just decided to eat a snack.
I doont feel good with the foods i eat.Its nothing new because I usually eat chicken and have snacks every night but i know that this isn't a very healthy life style. However i do know what foods i need to eat more of in order for me to be healthy. This process maybe harder done than said because I eat what my mom gives me. Also there is almost no fruits in my house and i dont know if my mom knows how to make healthy foods that include alot of vegetables.

HW 5 - Dominant Discourses Regarding Contemporary Foodways in the U.S.

I believe that we are living in a time in which significant reform will not occur. To me it appears as though the people writing those articles do in fact want a reform of foodways to occur because they are putting the time and effort to make vegetables more conveniant however i think the people of the U.S. just aren't willing to eat more vegetables and cut back on meat. However I believe that this is not entirely the fault of the people because there are so many fast food restaurants in the United States. In almost in every corner of every street there is some sort of fast food restraurant. It is almost as if the people in the food business are trieng to brain wash the people(us) in order to fulfill there desire which is to get money.
A well informed member of our society whose worldview gets sculpted by mass-media-propagated dominant discourse would eat fast food such as pizza, hamburgers, etc. She would eat this at the restaurant or at home. She would eat fast food during her lunch hours however she might not eat fast food for dinner. She would probably eat this food with her friends or family members. She would eat those types of food because it is the dominant discourse.Fast food is more dominant than vegetables in the United States.
Fast foods seem to be the most frequently discuseed. I believe this is because so many people in the U.S. eat fast food. Eeven when people are trieng to talk about healthy foods and trieng to sell healthy foods they bring up fast foods. "This week, the company released the 25th edition of its annual report, “Eating Patterns in America.” The news there wasn’t good, either. For example, only 23 percent of meals include a vegetable, Mr. Balzer said. (Again, fries don’t count, but lettuce on a hamburger does.)" (http://www.nytimes.com/2010/09/25/health/policy/25vegetables.html?emc=eta1) This quote proves that food is the most frequent discussed topic.

Hw 4 - Your Families' Foodways

The foods i eat do in fact compare to the foods my parents eat. For example a typical dish that i eat is rice and beans with fried chicken, which is also what my parents eat. My family and I basically eat the same meals, this is because my mom makes the foods that I eat.  Another reason why my parents and  I eat the same meals is because we eat at the table together and eat what is on the table. The portion my parents eat can be compared to the amount of food i eat. This could be compared because everyone in my house hold only gets one plate of food.
The foods I eat compare to the foods my grandparents eat too because  what my mom cooks she has learned from her parents (my grandparents). So basically there isn't anything that my grandparents make that i haven't tried before. However the amounts of foods i eat compared to the amount of food my grandparents eat to differ. They differ because my grandparents only have half a plate and sometimes don't even finish that meanwhile I finish my whole plate.
The amount of food i eat does infact differ from the amount of food my family members eat. This is because not everyone in my family lives in the same building with me, so they dont eat the same foods as me or my parents. They eat soup more than anything else which is not a typical dish that my parents or I eat. However there are similarities to the food we eat because since we are all the same race my parents, me, and my other family members do eat Ecuadorian typical dishes such as rice and beans with chicken.  Another Similarity would be we all eat fish. Fish Is a very popular dish to eat in Ecuador because they serve it in every single restaurant in Ecuador.

HW 3 - Food - Fast Food Insights and Green Market Realizations

The green market is different from the typical fast food restaurant (taco bell) because Unlike the green market taco bell is known. Also in the green market they sell a whole bunch of different foods and in taco bell they only sell mexican food. In addition taco bell is different from the green market because taco bell is a restaurant and the green market isn't. There is also the fact that the green market sells vegetables and healthy foods which taco bell doesnt include in their menus. The most different thing about the two places is that the green market not only sells food but they also sell clothes, which is something taco bell doesn't do.
The reason fast food is so successful is because they advertise their foods. For example they advertise in the computers, and they advertise in the televisions. Another reason fast food restaurants are so successful is because they are usually found everywhere you turn. They are almost on every single block. So its only natural for people to go inside and try there food. Another reason fast food restaurants are so successful is because the food isnt bad and the people that have triedd it and likes it tell other people to try it. This cycle kept on going until the fast food restuarants were filled with people wanting there foods.

HW 2 - Food - Initial Thoughts

The priorities I have with food is I must set the dinner table, and serve everyone in the house. Another priority I have is I must tell my mom what to make because I am a very picky eater. I think that these priorities are annoying because my mom should just make foods I like all the time. Also I shouldn't set the table all the time, someone like my brothers or father should set the table. My typical meal fails to meet the desires of my ideal meal because, in my ideal meal I visioned myself eating with all my family members such as my cousins, aunts, and uncles. Also in my ideal meal I visioned all my favorite foods on the table just waiting for me to eat it. I think that my ideal meal isn't impossible because it definitely could happen, but it would take a lot of phone calls and planning to get my family together for a meal. Another reason it would be harder to happen is because my family members would have to make alot of food to put on the table and it needs to be all of my favorite foods. Or at least include all of my favorite foods. My favorite foods include chicken parmigan with spaghetti and tomato sauce, lasagna, and Mac&cheese with fried chicken.
Food to me and my family is not sacred, it isn't sacred because we dont prey before eating or do anything religious related on the dinner table. The word sacred to me means being dedicated to some religious purpose. I believe that food is a very important part of life and is important to a person because without it everyone would die.  Food is important because it can keep your body physically and mentally strong. another reason food is important is because it produces energy for the body, and it keeps us going.
