HW 12 - Final Food Project 2 - Outline

Overarching Thesis: Individual living in our culture must recognize and respond to the nightmarish industrial atrocities at the root of dominant social practices in order to live a morally satisfactory life.
 Argument #1: Food
Major claim: Corrupt corporate business's Have become so greedy with having money that don't care for quality foods or health benefits anymore.
Supporting claim #1: Chemicals being added to meat for a faster shipping rate as well as unnatural feeding and contaminated processed ground beef

-Adding chemicals to processed foods for a faster shipping rate
Evidence:  By adding so much chmicals to there meats, people argue that there meat isn't even "real food" because the final product needs coloring added to it just so it could look like how meat is supposed to look.
-cows being fed corn leads to Kevins death because of a public breakout of E-Coli
Evidence: In Food, Inc. Barbara Kowalcyk's 2 year old son dies from E.coli poisoning after eating a hamburger."
-Contaminated processed ground beef
Evidence: After being tested positive for salmonella contamination, several ground beef processing plants were still able to sell there meats for several months after they took steps to cleaning up therefacilities.
Supporting claim #2:Heart diseases as well as obesity increase and  increase in diabetes
- heart disease, nothing but bad
Evidence: People with diabeties tend to have strokes twice as likely then those that do not have a heart disease. Also peopl with diabetes tend to have a stroke at a very early age that people.
-A huge obesity increase
Evidence: In 1971 the obisity rate was 5.8% and  in 2006 there has bein a 17.3% obisity rate.Which means that there is a 11.5% increase from 1971 to 2006
-Increase in diabetes
Evidence: from 1980 to 2008 there has bein a 144% increase in how many people had diabetes

HW 11 - Final Food Project 1

Being a vegetarian wasn't as hard as I initially thought it was going to be. Although i couldn't eat meat for 48 hours i found alternative ways to eating foods i liked. For example I had Rice and beans, many different salads and I also had cereal. One example of the salad i ate had lettuce and tomato's in it. The cereal i ate both days were lucky charms with milk.
Eating a meal with no meat in it made me feel so much fuller than if i ate a meal with meat in it. I also felt more better. What i mean by this is i wasn't as sleepy as i usualy am, and i felt more healthy. I wasn't as lazy as i usually am either. I wanted to go to the park an play sports and just go outside instead of staying home being on the computer all day. While eating these vegetarian meals it made me think more about the cruelty that they inflict on animals.
Being a vegetarian also made me do alot of thinking, for example i thought that everyone should try to be a vegetarian or they should have alot of salads and fruits so that they could balance out there diet. I also though more about the foods i was going to eat. When i was in the supermarket I saw fat foods and meats and thought to myself that these foods may be good to you but there not good for you. Just like in the movie we dont know the whole truth about what's in foods so its better to be safe ad go green rather than eating processed foods that could harm your body.
There is nothing more i could next time to make this process more efficient. I liked this "going vegetarian" experience. It kinda changed the way i am going to eat from here on out. I've decided to balance my meals to make it less fat and more healthy. One example would be, im going to always have a salad in my meal when i am eating meat.  I am also going to have fruits everyday, even if it's only one fruit a day that i am having. However the main thing that made me decide to eat more healthy was while eating vegetables it made me feel more better and more willing to do stuff, and i liked that feeling.

HW 12 - Final Food Project 2 - Outline

Thesis: Individual living in our culture must recognize and respond to the nightmarish industrial atrocities at the root of dominant social practices in order to live a morally satisfactory life.
Argument #1: Many of the dominant social practices in our society is considered “normal,” however if we dig deeper and find out what the big companies don’t want us to know (the whole story) then the citizens of the United States will end up finding nightmarish and industrial atrocities. One of these nightmarish atrocities being, what process did the foods go through to get to the supermarket. Another example would be, not many people know what really happens in these “farms.” Processed foods(Fast foods) we eat have added chemicals in them. These chemicals are added to the foods just so the companies could make more money for themselves by having there foods ready for shipment at a faster rate. Keep in mind that these foods get shipped everywhere, for example they get shipped to Mc.Donalds and supermarkets. Also a lot of these processed foods are very unhealthy for us. One could even debate that the foods we eat isn’t even real food. The reason people are starting to think this is because chickens, cows, and pigs are now getting dipped into so many chemicals that when they are “ready” for shipment the flavors and the coloring is not natural it’s processed.
Evidence
: Omnivore’s dilemma young readers editionEvidence: Still rising obesity rates
Argument #2: Fast foods restaurants are so easy to come across nowadays that it’s no wonder obesity rates are increasing. However this isn’t necessarily only the peoples fault because the companies are promoting this.
Evidence: Omnivore’s dilemma young Readers edition
Evidence: Still rising obesity rates

Monday, October 25, 2010

Thesis Statement:
Processed foods are a atrocity in this society, these nightmarish industrial foods prove to be very bad for the body, however some dominant social practices show that organic foods could be the cure for this curropt foodway of life.
Alot of foods can be considered atrocities to us because these nightmarish foods are not good for us and it isn't healthy or "real food." However organic foods would be the normal way to go because organic foods are filled with no chemicals and more healthier.
Proposal #1: Experimental.
Proposal #2: Academic.

HW 7d

Omnivore's Dilemma: Young Readers' Edition Chapters 21
Precis: Mushroom hunting is much harder than one would think. The reson for this is because mushrooms have it's own seasons for sprouting and only sprout under some trees. The reason hunters call it mushroom hunting is because they must don't simply pick out a bunch of mushrooms rather they must go and search for some and some mushrooms may be poisonous and cannot be eaten. Also while hunting for mushrooms alot of questions had popped up that not even scientists knew. Later I had found out that mushrooms are really hard to abalyze because if you pull a mushroom from the ground parts of the mushroom will just fall off from the mushroom.
Quote: On page 252, "These thin, threadlike cells form a web buried in the soil. You can't dig it up a mushroom to study it because the mycelium is too tiny and delicate. If you try to seperate them from the soil they just fall apart.
Thoughts: Mushrooms seem to have more to them than meets the eye. I wonder what the differences are between a regular mushroom and a poisonous mushroom are, because some people have gotten the two mixed up before.
Omnivore's Dilemma: Young Readers' Edition Chapters 22
Precis:  Preparing a "perfect meal was harder than expected. Making foods that are healthier and better for the body to ingest is much harder than just eating a cheeseburger. However I was not about to prepare these fast foods because i was inviting all the people that has helped me along my advanture to eat with me. It was a way of saying thank you to all of the people that has helped me with research. Also even thought some of the foods were made from animals such as pigs, I made sure that it was helthier for us to eat. (organic)
Quote: On page 275, "One of the wonders of my do-it-yourself meal was how little it had damaged the world."
Thoughts: It appears that the narrator has changed his view food. It appears as if he now cares more about what foods he eats and he will not eat certain foods that he might had eaten if he had not gone through this advanture.

HW 10 - Food, Inc. Response

Processed farms are treating Chickens like fruits. This is terrible because the difference between the chickens and the fruits is that chickens have life, unlike fruits, chickens feel pain and do suffer. To make matters worse the chickens don't even live a good life before they die. As a matter a fact chickens life couldn't be worse, They cant even walk without fallen because of how big they've become. However Organic farms are better both for how they treat chickens before they kill them but also for us to eat. The chickens in the organic farms get to life outdoors and aren't forced to eat only corn. The chickens are living like they naturally would. Plus in the organic farms they dont add chemicals to the chickens to make the delivering process faster.
The movie offered a real visual image plus it showed the exact process of the way the chickens died, which is something the book didn't show. On the other hand the book was more detailed in other parts like what the chicken lives were like before dying and what abormal things the chickens did because they were caged up.
One question that i still have is why in the world do these big governments not wait a few days for delivering there foods to the supermarkets and feel the need to add chemicals to there foods? One thought i have is, can humans be so blinded by money that they dont see the totures things they are doing to the animals?

HW 7d.

Omnivore's Dilemma: Young Readers' Edition Ch. 20
Precis: Waning to Hunt for the pigs was on my agenda because i felt a though i needed to know how it makes the person feel and what he thinks while huntng.  Me and me colleagues stumbled across a couple of pigs, which made me feel very pumped but also a little sad because i was going to decide the fate of the pig. With these mixed emotins i finally got a clear shoot on the animal and killed it. I was so Relieved to find out that i didn't need to shoot the animal again. Even though it seems as though i was feeling sad truth be told hunting is very exciting.
Quote: On page 240, "Death was quickly overtaking her. I was relieved she wouldn't need a second shoot."
Thoughts: This shows me that the main character isn't like other people in this world ans even though he's a meat eater he does feel pity for animals. Which is also understandible because you took someones life. This is a very sad thing.

HW 7d

Omnivore's Dilemma: Young Readers' Edition Ch. 19
Precis: Animals happines matters to alot of vegetarians, this is because they see an animals life as precious as human lives so you could imagine why vegtarians so this as a crime. However the people killing the animal doesn't see killing a animals life as precious as others might and it appears as though they have no problem doing it, but they dont seem satisfied doing it because they try to keep what goes on in the slaughterhouse a secret. In addition not everybody knows that vegetarians actually take sacrifices being a vegetarian because many of his friends may be meat eaters. This thus leads to unfomfortable eating with friends and even becoming a birden to family or friends.
Quote: On page , "As a guest, if I forget to tell my hosts in advance that I don't eat meat, they feel bad. But if i do tell them, they'll make something special for me, and i'll feel bad."
Thoughts: I believe that this is really bad luck to the vegetarians, that so many people are carnivores. But i also believe that some sacrifices need to be made when being healthy. Also in the long run being a vegetarian would be the better choice.

HW 7d

Omnivore's Dilemma: Young Readers' Edition chap. 18
Precis: Getting a hunters license was more work than usual because we have to go to class so we coud learn about this stuff. However getting a gun in california involved no work at all, anyone could get a high powered rifle there. After going through the hunting classes i was finally able to go hunting. Once i knew i was going to be able to hunt i got very excited. Once i was at beverly hill's it made me realized dat i haven't been seing the world like i have in a long time.
Quote: On page 212, " But looking for food did change the way i looked at nature. It made me look more closely at  everything. It made me pay attention in a way i haden't in years."
Thoughts: I cant believe it made him realize that he hadn't seen the world this way. Are there more people like this due to the foods we have and how easy it is to obtain food?

HW 7d

Omnivore's Dilemma: Young Readers' Edition  Ch. 17
Precis: pastured animals are healthier to eat and live a more happier life. Pastured animals also contain higher levels of polyunsaturated fats instead of monounsaturated fats, which is healthier and better for the humans to eat. The reason for the chickens being healthier was because they lived outdoors all there lives. Another reason would be because animals raised outdoors live on a diet much like that of the wild animals, so its no wonder they would be better to eat because they aren't forced to only eat one thing thats not the best thing for them to eat.
Quote: On page 197, "When cattle, chickens, and other animals eat grass And not just corn or other grains they are actually healthier for us to eat."
Thoughts: Is grasss the best thing for animals such as cattle, chickens, and other animal to eat? Or is there something even better for animals to eat?

HW 7c

Omnivore's Dilemma: Young Readers' Edition Ch. 13
Precis: Farming was a family business. "I'm actually a third-generation alternative farmer." Joel said. the farm now known as polyface wasnt was in a worse condition then it is than now.The reason for this was because the farm had bein abused by other tenant farmers. This became a huge  problem because other farmers would still grow corn and other grains there. This resulted in soils no loner being soil, and ever since then they've bein trying to rapair the farm.
Quote: on page 159, "In many places there was no topsoil left whatsoever just outcroppings of granite and clay. We've been working to heal this land ever since."
Thoughts: I cant believe that some farmers dont have any respect for there farms. They shouldn't be farmers then if they're
going to disrespect a farm like that.
Omnivore's Dilemma: Young Readers' Edition Ch. 14
Precis: During the winter the corn ferments. This turns the corn into alcohol. This is very suprising because why would joel leave this for the pigs to eat? The answer i recieved was because pigs love it, and that pigs are especially useful for rooting it out with his powerful snout and for there good sense of smell. The reason this is very useful to joel is because the pigs kill any harmful bacteria.
Quote: on page 168, "This is the sort of farm machinary I like," Joel told me on afternoon as we watched the pigs do their work."
Thoughts: This quote shows that pigs are very useful in the farms. They seem like they live a happy live, thats is until they are killed to be made into food.
Omnivore's Dilemma: Young Readers' Edition Ch. 15
Precis: The process of the birds being killed was hard to watch. You cant help but feel sad for the chicken. I was even able to kill a chicken myself. I had to follow a procedure on how to kill the chicken(chop the chickens head off). When i saw the chicken and looked into his eyes luckily i didn't feel anything so i was comfortable killing the chicken but it was a rather sad thing to do. I had killed a dozen chicken or so before moving on to the next station.
Quote: On page 177, "I looked into the black eye of the chicken and, thankfully I saw nothing, not a flicker of fear."
Thoughts: I always hated the process of how chickens died. It's so sad but i love chicken wings and chicken in general so i guess i shouldn't complain.
Omnivore's Dilemma: Young Readers' Edition Ch. 16
Precis: Eevm though food is the focus of our international movement, we can decide what foods go into our bodies. We the people can make big changes in the food system, for example our desire to have cleaner, healthier foods have created a $20-billion market for industrial organic foods. However changing to a locol food economy wont be easy. But I believe that when consumers know once again how there food is produced they will eat the most healthiest cleanist foods. Eating localy will also benefit the farmers because this will mean that the farmers will not have to leave there farms to live somewhere else.
Quote: on page 191, "When consumers know once again how their food is produced, they are naturally going to want it produced in the cleanest, most humane and environmentally healthy ways.
Thoughts: I want to believe that humans will change when they know everything about how processed foods come to be, but i dont think people will stop eating fat foods. I believe this because these foods such as cheeseburgers or fried chicken have bein eaten by people for a long time and I dont think people will stop eating it because they like the food to much to stop eating it.

HW 9 - Freakonomics Response

One of the most intelectual moves the people in the movie made was bribery. An example of this is, the people from the University of Chicago wouldn't have bein able to do there little experiment if they did not bribe the students with money. However this move was a waste because one of the students actually failed even though he was being bribed with money. So despite the failed attempt of using bribery this was still something the people tried to use to get there data.
The most simple intellectual move that the people in the movie made was they went up to random people in the street to get information . This was done in the same time they were talking about peoples names (this section was basically during the beginning of the movie). The information the people tried to gather was all about names for example, what they think is a unique name. In my opinion, this is a good way to get sources because it is impossible to get corrupt data from this.  From the people speaking to other random people on the street we were able to learn that the patterns in our names are considered to be normal, but as we dig deeper we realize that the reason for that person having that name may actually be really wierd.
The past tool leads up to the third tool thaqt was used which was statistics. the statistics tool was most displayed in the sumo wrestling. Untol today sumo wrestling was one of the most hnorable sports there was. The sumo wrestling went so far back that the japanese people would connect it to there culture and there religion. However honor and far play was not so honorable anymore because reasearchers had found out that 75% of the time one of the wrestlers needed one ore win to move one to the next round, they usually fought someone who was already garenteed a spot in the next round. The resason for this was because the guy that needed one more win would win, later on in the movie I found out that the sumo wrestler with the garunteed spot let the other wrestler win.
I believe that the statistics are the most reliable. I think this because hard facts is something that can't be tampered with and it can be very hard to change the facts. For example in the sumo wrestling part of the movie the authors were trying to show us that there was a conspiracy happening  where the person with a gaurenteed spot of going to the next round would lose 3/4 times to a fighter that needed one more win. Although it is possible that the person that didn't need a win didn't do his best in the match because he felt as though he didn't need to, and that the person that only needed one more win tried as hard as he possibly could explain the previous statistic but i believe that there was cheating going on. Another piece of evidence that was relied on by the authors of Freakonomics is the interviews and with the professors interviewing random people on the street. However this method isonly accurate to those who were question ed and not for everyone. Also because not every one feels the same way on this subject.
I agree with the statement, that Freakonomics served as an information and a good example to attempt to explore the "hidden in plain sight" weirdness of dominant social practices. I agree because it showed me that there is always going to be parts of the story that most people wont know and one will need to dig deeper in order to find the "whole truth/whole story." This connects to our current studies on how many things that are considered normal are actually not normal at all in foodways. I believe these two things connect because in the movie it talks about how sumo wrestling can be used when talking about there culture and religion, and how there was signs of cheating, But it would in order to find cheating you would have to do alot of investigation work to really know "the truth" which is what you will have to do to find out about whole foods and processed foods. And this is may be weird to people because they would learn new things those new things they have learned may be very unexpected and weird to them.

HW 7c

Omnivore's Dilemma: Young Readers' Edition Ch. 12
Precis: Grass and herbivores formed a partnership over millions of years of evlolution. This evloution has progressed over time and in that time people learned how to grow grasses like wheat rice and corn. These grasses were different however becaus they had huge enriched edible seeds. This caused a huge change and difference in the world because  humans didn't need herbivores to turn the grass into meat.
Quote:"Humans could harvest and eat those seeds."
Thoughts:I wonder if new discoveries like this will be found out.
I wonder how long it would take to find new discoveries, if there are any.

HW 7b

Omnivore's Dilemma: Young Readers' Edition chpter 11
Precis: The non-organic food chain over the years have made great strides. Its good to know that the animals and plants that go into our meals weren't infected by pesticides. Also its good to know that no soils were poisoned. In recent studies we discovered that organic foods and vegetables contained higher levels of vitamin c and had a natural chemical called polyphenols.
Quote: The study showed that the organic fruits and vegetables contained higher levels of vitamin C. They also had a wider range of natural chemicals called polyphenols.
Thoughts: I cant believe that fruits and vegetables were this good for you.I knew they were good for you because I knew they are a good source of vitamin C, etc. But I had no idea it had polyphenols. And until now i didn't know what polyphenols were.

HW 7b - Reading Schedule

Omnivore's Dilemma: Young Readers' Edition chapter 10
Vegetables are a big deal in the U.S. and need to be cared for to make sure it reaches the supermarkets safely and fresh. What people don't know is that the farmers have their hands full keeping the vegetables fresh. For example the lettuce we eat before reaching the supermarkets need to be washed, need to be kept under a certain room temperature, and the leaves need to be sorted.  Also most people dont know how much of a struglle this is. Imagine having to wash 2.5 million pounds of lettuce each week. Now i dont know about you but that's more lettuce than i would wanna see in a week.
Quote:On page 125, "The plant washes and packs 2.5 million pounds of lettuce a week."
Thoughts: This blew my mind.I cant believe dat farmers work this hard.I truly believe dat farmers work to much and don't get paid as much as they should.

HW 8 - Growing Our Own Food

To grow some of my food was a pretty fun experience and something i've never done before. Unfortunantly though my plant never grew into food and i was unable to see my seeds sprout into plants. It lead to the realizations that farmers have a hard job  than i though. The fact that they have to grow way more food than i did is mind blowing. The process would have been magical if my plant grew but i still think that this was still a good experience.

HW 7b - Reading Schedule

chapter 6 of the Book "Omnivore's Dilemma: Young Readers' Edition"
Precis: The development of processed foods has grown so much over the years. I was able to get a tour of the research and development laboratory of general mills. Whrere I found out that the government makes more money off of selling processed foods then the farmers who make the food. This is why farmers perfer people buy whole foods because the farmer will get more money out of it.
Quote: On page 72, "The farmer on the other hand makes more money from whole foods than processed foods."
Thoughts: The governmnet abuses their power. They aren't fair and they are making alot more money then they should. They aren't doing as much as farmers to be making more than them on processed foods.
chapter 7 of the Book "Omnivore's Dilemma: Young Readers' Edition"
Precis:Obesity is now more than ever before. This is all because people are now getting their foods "supersized." I believe that this is because people are ashamed of not getting up and asking for seconds. Instead they'll just order a "supersized" meal. However not all of this is the peoples fault and the government has part of this huge apidemic. I say this because the government helps pay the farmers for corn and soy beans but not carrots. This means that the govt. Will only help pay for non healthy fat foods but not for healthy foods.
Quote: on page 83 "The U.S. governmnet (spending taxpayer dollars)helps pay farmers to grow corn and soybeans, but not to grow carrots.
Thoughts: The government should just pick a side because they tell us to eat healthy but they don't help with the problem and are actually part of the problem. They wanna seem like role models by telling us to eat healthy when in secrecy they are not helping the problem one bit.
chapter 8 of the Book "Omnivore's Dilemma: Young Readers' Edition"
Precis: Us beeng the omnivores we are can eat almost any food there is. We try different foods and most humans rely on how the food tastes like.If the person likes the food most likely he'll continue eating it but if the person doesn't like the way the food tastes like the person will most likely not continue eating it.  However we cant always rely on our tastebuds because some people may not like vegetables but it is good for the person.
Quote: On page 89, "It turns out that some of the bitterest plants contain valuable nutrients, even useful medicines. We can;t only rely on our sense of taste when we chose what we eat."
Thoughts I blieve that this is true but it will be hard for a person to start eating foods that they dont like just because it is good for things.
chapter 9 of the Book "Omnivore's Dilemma: Young Readers' Edition"
Precis: The meal at mc. Donalds was good. The chesseburger was good but without the ketchup, mustard, pickles, ad onions the grey patty had hardly any flavor. This made me realize that these undustrial foods have been processed so much it no longer seems as though they were made from animals. This caused me to add up how much corn Judith, Isaac, and i consumed and it added up to three and a half pounds of corn!!!!That was much more than expected
Quote: On page 102, "Where did my cheeseburger come from? It came from McDonald's. As far as food companies are concerned, that's all we need to know."
Thoughts: Mcdonalds and other fast food restaurants dont tell the whole story of where their foods come from.I wonder if they are embarrased of how there cheeseburgers are made.

HW 8 - Growing Our Own Food

Growing my own food wasn't really a good experience, It was merely plants growing to me. The realizaions that this experiment led to was it proved what i thought which was everyone can make the same food and that making your own food from scratch isn't anything special. This process was more of a forced one because I would never do this on my free time, However it was new and interesting,

HW 7 - Reading Response Monday

Title: The omnivore's ilemma

On chapters one and two corn Is a big topic. In every single food there is corn added to it. Even foods that may not seem that they have corn in it, corn is there for example chicken nuggets are really corn wrapped up in more corn. So the phrase you are what you eat, is true but this means that what we are today is corn. This is true because scientists have traced te element of carbon as it goes from the atmosphere into plants, then inot our food, and finally, into us.
Alot of meat eaters dont actually know what's in their foods and because of this it is likely that they eat all different types of foods. However even more people dont know or even think about, what that animal ur about to eat has eaten before it died. As one could imagine animals dont have such a huge varieties of food o choose from, and they can only eat either what they are given by the farmers or what they find. But this is just the beginning of the bad news because the cow would eat only corn and be around its own manure every single day. So eating a hamburger would be like eating toxic waste.
